Job purpose

You will form the crucial bridge between marketing requirements and delivery platforms (products, services, vendors, etc.); you will engineer proof of concept product and service environments; you will work closely with Operations to ensure that Data Centre integration of delivery platforms conforms to best practices, data centre environment and all company procedures and certifications. The role of the Product and Infrastructure Engineer is to provide solutions to the business requirements posed by Product Development and Operational Service Delivery, as well as ensuring the long-term suitability of those solutions as used by Data Centre and Customer Support Centre staff. The Engineering department is responsible for NTT Europe Online’s Product and Infrastructure Engineering, technology evaluation and development and maintenance of Service Delivery Platforms.  Specifically, the role involves delivery of high quality product and infrastructure engineering, systems design and administration, focusing on Microsoft technologies. The role is strongly Microsoft focused, but will also be exposed to all aspects of engineering and technologies used within large scale data centres, including enterprise backup, monitoring systems, server deployment systems, managed security and service management consoles. Additionally the role will be required to give expert advice to all support tiers, operations teams, product management, procurement, local sales and sales consultants on Microsoft related technologies. This role requires excellent troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.

Accountabilities and scope

  • Definition, organization and consolidation of market and technical requirements
  • Evaluation of technologies and vendors in order to propose solutions
  • Creation, communication and management of technical project plans
  • Maintenance and management of technical product documentation
  • Work closely with Data Centre Engineering team (Operations)
  • Manage and develop the environment that we use to provision Windows servers
  • Day-to-day systems administration, management, design and deployment of Microsoft infrastructure servers
  • Creation of OS builds images for server deployment, including customisation and automation of OS and application installation, setting the build definitions and standards
  • New product engineering, existing product refinement
  • Technical lead for future development of Microsoft based systems
  • Take an active part in infrastructure development and planning. Involves testing and evaluation of new equipment, documentation and deployment
  • Provide expert advice to all support tiers, operations teams, product management, procurement, local sales and sales consultants on Microsoft related technologies

Relationship and roles

The role will be within the Central Operations Team, as a primary European contact for all of the Microsoft focused engineering systems in each of the European facilities. This includes definition of standards and practices, as well as ongoing maintenance, management and development of these systems.  There will be additional responsibilities for non-Microsoft systems.

Additionally the role will liaise with all support tiers, operations teams, product management, procurement, local sales and sales consultants, on Microsoft related technologies as well as providing occasional on-call support for internal servers and applications.

Skills and experience

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are required. Very strong English skills are a must; knowledge of French, Spanish or German a plus
  • A combination of sound business sense and technical creativity
  • Advanced understanding of internet application delivery technologies  (Windows, Linux, Solaris, advanced TCP/IP networking, web and middleware applications, content delivery networks)
  • Experience with internet security and managed security environments (firewalls, VPN, IDS/IPS, content filtering, etc.)
  • Strong customer/market focus with excellent analytical skills
  • Experience in managed services or application hosting environments
  • Demonstrated strong documentation skills
  • Implementing, managing and administering a Windows Server 2000/2003/2008 Active Directory Server Infrastructure, including complex multi-AD environments
  • Automated server deployment systems – Network based PXE Server OS installs in the data center environment i.e. Remote Installation Services (RIS), ADS, WDS, BDD
  • Automation and customisation of installation of OS and applications for Server Builds
  • Scripting experience essential – WSH and Cmd.exe, with supporting VBS, WMI skill set.  Powershell, PERL, Python and C# a bonus
  • Microsoft Active Directory – Planning/design/implementation/admin/support
  • Microsoft Cluster Service – Planning/design/implementation/admin/support
  • Experience of the SPUR - Licensing Microsoft Server products under the SPLA agreement
  • Microsoft Exchange – Planning/design/implementation/admin/support
  • Microsoft SQL Server – Planning/design/implementation/admin/support
  • Microsoft/ Unix interoperability, LDAP
  • Storage - SAN/NAS/DAS, ISCSI/FC. NetApps and IBM DS series preferred
  • Experience of disaster recovery/ repair & restore of Windows server OS, SQL, and Exchange
  • Experience with deployment/support/admin of Veritas (Symantec) Netbackup for Windows OS and Exchange/ SQL Agents
  • Strong TCP/IP networking skills. Firewalls, DNS (BIND and Microsoft AD Integrated), routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), web servers (IIS, Apache)
  • VMWare ESX Virtual Infrastructure

Education and professional qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or equivalent experience
  • More than 5 years experience in a large Data Center Environment and related technologies
  • Experience managing 100s of servers in a Data Center Environment
  • Experience supporting servers in a LAN/WAN environment 
  • MCSE or MCSA, any other Microsoft qualifications i.e. MCDBA
  • More than 2 years experience managing a complex multi-domain Active Directory Forest
  • IBM Hardware qualifications/ certifications. Series X preferred
  • Cisco CCNA
  • NetApps certification/ training
  • Veritas Netbackup certification/ training
  • Other Storage/ Backup vendor certification/ training
